Dragging feet resumes

So after my very first 21km run, I resumed running today. Only managed to cover 5km cause 2 things went terribly wrong...
  1. I puked. Yes...you read it correctly. I might have pushed too hard or maybe breakfast didnt quite agree with me or that I had diarrhea last night.
  2. Chafing AGAIN at the groin region. Sigh...guess I need to start hunting for jelly or get other sports briefs. Renoma Sports kononye!! -_-"
Since Im already up so early, what shall I do today?! Hmmnn...

Standard Chartered KL Marathon

Yes!! I've completed my first ever half marathon (21km) in 2 hours 52 minutes which is under the 3 hour limit!! The timing isnt exactly spectacular but what can you expect from a person who's only been training for 2 months or so (bought my shoes on the 23rd April 2009 as posted here). So here's what went down on the day of the marathon...

Met up with Andrew at Kelana Jaya LRT station at 3.30am. Yes I know...damn early but needed to head there to get good parking spot as well as have our pre-run meals which mainly consisted of energy bars, bananas, lots of water and in my case...COFFEE!! At bout 4.30am, it started to rain...quite sorry for the full marathon runners as they started their race in the rain at 5am. Here's the route of the race I was about to undertake...

Follow the green line...

So having time till our race actually starts (which is 6.15am)...camwhore lor!! Having nothing but my trusty Nokia N82...we snapped away.

Me...damn blardy hyped up with about 4 bananas, 1 energy bar, 1 litre of water & 2 cans of coffee in the tanks!!

My buddy Andrew with an awesomely cool bib number!! :p

Andrew's running buddy William.

...and Andrew's friend Charles

And so the race began. The first 12km was surprisingly very easy...covered it in about 40mins or so. But then, needed to stop for a toilet break as there was just too much water in me. That's when things started to slow down a little for me...the coffee effect was gone!! -_-" Just pushed on anyway.

Somewhere about 10km left to the finish line...problems after problems started to kick in starting with cramps at thighs and calves. Soon to follow, major chafing at groin region...thought about posting a picture but I think its a little too graphic. F*cking hurts like hell!! ...and finally, major feet arch pains due to the insoles. This is what you get for lack of training I suppose. To make matters worse...the last blardy 10kms were practically uphill!! Grrr!! Pushed on...pacing myself with other participants.

At the 2km mark...I was almost fully spent. Dragging feet...till this runner came along whom I smiled at. Now this is funny and painfully motivational, he said "Smile what smile?! 2km more...RUN la!!". Adrenaline kicked in and I pushed...till the very end.

After crossing the finish line, headed to collect my finishers medal. In the crowds, I managed to bump into a few colleagues of mine which finished way ahead of me. All below the 2 hours 40 minutes region. Was somewhat demotivated in a way. Oh well, waited for a bit till Andrew and William arrived...to take pictures!!

Me with my finisher's medal!!

Group picture!! We did it guys!! ^_^

Ohh...also managed to bump into a local blogger celebrity as well. Mr Kenny Sia!! ...he completed his half marathon in 2 hrs 34 minutes.

Me with Kenny Sia. Cool shirt man!!

Hanged around the 100plus & water station to replenish the lost fluids before heading back to the car for lunch. Worst EVER walk back to car as everything was already beginning to hurt!! Here's a summarized version of what happened next:
  1. Lunch - Pork Noodles (BIG). Got home and ate somemore (Chicken Rice). Damn hungry wei!! -_-"
  2. Took a cold shower and started crying cause cold water touched the sore groin region from the chafing!! Note to self, next run...either run in tights or get petroleum jelly. Dried hair and went to sleep
  3. Slept till about 7pm when I was disturbed by rumbling in the stomach
  4. Got up, ate salad before ordering pizza from Dominos and whacked a whole regular pizza, onion rings and a whole bottle of 100plus
  5. At bout 9pm, got hungry...so ate the balance of bananas I bought (about 6 big ones) and 2 litres of water
  6. Went to bed at bout 1am
Didnt quite feel my accomplishments as everyone I knew seemed to be so much faster...till I really thought about it. It was my first time, only had about 2 months of training and instead of joining the 10km run...I went straight to 21km (overambitious as always!!) and I still managed to finish in the allocated time. So in a way...I should be very proud of myself though much more work is needed.

Motivations to keep on running was none other than my darling. Kept on picturing her asking me not to give up and keep it up like she always does whenever I struggle at anything. Ferry Corsten was also awesome for keeping the running pace but there was a slip up in my playlist. The song ended and the next one was a slow build up one..during an uphill run. -_-" Dammit!!

Awesome awesome experience!! Will definitely continue running (its also awesome for losing weight in addition to a low-carb diet!! Shed like 5 kgs since I got back from Kuching. I'm 78kgs at this very time!!) and the next target is the half marathon in Singapore come December with a target time...2 hours 30 minutes!! Will use the upcoming Siemens 10km run as a benchmark on how much I can push...
